What are double degree programs?

Double degree programs are international degree programs that KIT has developed in close collaboration with selected partner universities abroad. As a student in a double degree program, you will complete part of your studies in Karlsruhe and part at the partner university abroad. Upon completion of the program, you will receive two degrees: a bachelor’s or master’s degree from KIT, and a degree from the partner university abroad.

What are the benefits of KIT's double degree programs?

Excellence2
As a participant in a KIT double degree program, you will not only study at a German university of excellence with unique research opportunities, but you will also earn a degree from another renowned foreign university.
Broaden your horizons and add an international dimension to your education at KIT! Whether through lectures by leading experts at partner institutions, insights into state-of-the-art research facilities in other countries, or first-hand experience with university and academic systems that are sometimes completely different!

Time Savings

A double degree program requires little or no more time than a regular degree program with a single degree—thanks to the coordinated curriculum and automatic credit recognition. You can complete a double degree program in significantly less time than two separate degree programs.

Automatic Recognition
KIT automatically recognizes the accomplishments you achieve at the partner university. Conversely, the partner institution also recognizes the courses you have successfully completed at KIT without any further action on your part.
This is made possible by the close coordination between the two universities in program development and quality assurance. The recognition of accomplishments is clearly stipulated in the cooperation agreement between the two universities—eliminating the need for discussions regarding the recognition of individual courses.

Tuition Waivers and Scholarships
As a participant in a double degree program, you are typically exempt from tuition fees at the partner university abroad. This allows you to earn a foreign bachelor’s or master’s degree without having to pay the sometimes very high tuition fees that you would otherwise have to pay as a regular student there.
In addition, you can receive financial support through various scholarship programs. Details can be found in the respective program descriptions (see the overview at the bottom of the page) or from the International Students Office.

A Well-Organized Network

As a student in a double degree program, you’re not on your own—you’re part of a group of German and international students who share the same targets, challenges, and interests. The alumni associations provide practical help and first-hand advice.

And, of course, both at KIT and at the partner university, dedicated contact persons in the Departments and the business unit responsible for international affairs are always available to support you with academic and organizational matters. This naturally includes preparatory and ongoing language courses.

Excellent Career Prospects

Two degrees under your belt and a wealth of opportunities! Should you look for a job in Germany, in a partner country, or elsewhere in the world? A doctorate—or perhaps even a double doctorate?

No matter what you decide: With degrees from two renowned universities and your extra dose of subject-specific, linguistic, and intercultural skills, many doors are open to you worldwide!

What double degree programs are available, and where can I find more information?

Double degree programs have a long tradition at KIT, so there are now a wide variety of options available. Most double degree programs are offered with France, but study abroad opportunities in other European countries, as well as in Asia and South America, are also available through double degree programs.

In the overview list below, you will find all of KIT’s double degree programs sorted by country. Each partnership includes a link to a program description. Here you can learn more about the course of study, the application process, funding options, and the contact information for your point of contact.

As a general rule, the respective KIT Department is responsible for academic supervision. For all double degree programs with France, both students and the KIT Departments are supported by the France Team in the implementation of the program. Under the “Double Degree Programs” section, you’ll find useful information, such as details on available scholarships.
