In the Upper Rhine region, the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Haute-Alsace and Strasbourg and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) form the trinational university network Eucor - The European Campus. The five-member universities cooperate in the areas of teaching, research, innovation and administration and promote the cross-border mobility of students and employees of the partner universities in science and administration. The European Campus offers double degree programmes and binational doctorates (Cotutelle), enables the appointment of joint professorships and creates joint research infrastructures.
As early as 1989, the neighbouring universities joined forces to cooperate more closely. In 2015, they deepened their cooperation and founded the European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Eucor - The European Campus. They can act as their own legal entity within this framework. In the joint strategic plan for the years 2019 to 2023, the partner universities defined four main research topics: Quantum Sciences and Technology, Personalised Health - Precision Medicine, Sustainability and European Identities. In these research areas, new synergies are to be created and cooperation between the partners is to be deepened even further. Another focus is the promotion of interculturality. The aim is also to build an attractive science and research area without walls and borders with international appeal.
