KIT has close and diverse partnerships with French universities, Grandes Écoles, and leading research institutions. As a German-French innovation motor for Europe, KIT, together with France, shapes groundbreaking research and transfer collaborations. These include the CNRS-Helmholtz International Research Dark Matter Laboratory (IRL), the French-German Institute for Industry of the Future, and strategic cooperations with CEA, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), as well as with CNRS und dem INRIA on innovative topics such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and energy systems.
If you have any questions about German-French research collaborations and funding programs please contact Manuella Werp.
KIT has been collaborating with the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) for over 50 years. The partnership began in the fields of nuclear safety and waste management and has been strategically expanded over time, particularly in fusion research, renewable energy, and climate research.

Against this backdrop the KIT, as a center participating in the Helmholtz Research Area Energy, and the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) (together with CEA LitenCNRS, and INRIA in Grenoble) are exploring the potential for a deeper strategic partnership. Forward-looking research areas such as artificial intelligence, energy system design, hydrogen and electrochemical technologies, and battery research build on a long-standing successful collaboration in quantum technology between Grenoble and Karlsruhe.
Strong academic ties are fostered through German-French double-degree programs, supported by the German-French University (DFH / UFA), enabling dual degrees in fields such as mechanical engineering and physics. KIT also promotes mobility through research scholarships for master’s students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs, French language courses, and administrative support for internships in France, including assistance with the required Convention de Stage.
If you have any questions about the German-French double degree programs please contact Susanne Kaliwe-Geoffroy.
