Consequently, we use mental shortcuts to complete missing information about the world around us, also about our colleagues, superiors or employees. Pupils from the district of Karlsruhe are involved in an exciting citizen science project organised by the EPICUR alliance: as active co-creators of a social science research project, they are cooperating with project partners from Poland, Denmark, Greece and Germany.
 
As part of the project, quantitative surveys are being used to analyse perceptions of climate change across borders and generations.

In the course of this workshop of two hours’ duration, we will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of AI tools in German-English translations. We will have a look at different AI tools in daily practice and will discuss the advantages and limits of AI-based translation tools based on examples. At the end, we will draw conclusions as to how AI can be used optimally in daily routine translation.
 
The workshop will be part of the International Days 2025. Participation is cost-free.
 
The workshop in German particularly addresses employees of KIT, who have a good command of German and whose tasks include translations of texts into English.

Topics such as anti-discrimination and diversity play a central role, especially at an international university like KIT. But how can anti-discrimination be promoted in concrete terms? What challenges do minorities face at a university and what solutions does Academia itself offer? How can open-mindedness be practiced at KIT and equal opportunities promoted, and where do we encounter everyday racism on campus?
 
 
The author and speaker Anna Mendel will talk about this in her lecture ‘Diversity on campus? - Discrimination at universities’. Afterwards, we would like to discuss the topic.
 
 
The event is organized by the AG Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination.
 
DAAD Prize  
The German Academic Exchange Service Prize for Foreign Students (DAAD Prize) will also be awarded during the event. The prize is endowed with 1,000 euros and is awarded to students who have made special academic achievements and have also shown outstanding commitment in an international context at KIT.

Doing your doctorate at KIT: Information about the doctorate at KIT
 
The decision to pursue a doctorate raises many questions: What are the admission requirements? What types of PhDs are available? How do I find a topic? Who will supervise me? As the central institution for early-career support, Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) is the point of contact for advising prospective and current doctoral candidates at KIT. This talk provides an overview of all information related to the doctorate at KIT, including the necessary formal steps that are important before, during, and at the end of your doctorate, and also informs about funding programs offered by KHYS.

Africa is at the beginning of an education and science revolution that can be accelerated through international cooperation. How strong partnerships between Germany and Africa can effectively support this transformation is the focus of our discussion today.
 
Our roundtable offers experts a unique platform to discuss the immense potential, challenges, and opportunities for building and deepening cooperation. They will give insights into new models for collaboration in the research and education sector which have the goal to support effective and competency-oriented growth of the African education and research sector.

From Global Science to Local Action in Africa Lecture by Dr. Chris Funk, Director of the Climate Hazards Center (CHC) at the University of California   Abstract: In our modern world, so filled with distraction, it can be easy to forget the value of principles. Some simple ethical principles – like being kind to each other and helping those most in need – have laid the foundation of civilization. Some simple physical principles – like how warmer air holds more water vapor – help lay the foundation for climate hazard forecasting in a warming world. In our applied climate research, we have found that connecting these principles informs effective early warning systems. These systems take advantage of global scientific resources to inform local life-saving anticipatory actions. This is what we will talk about in this presentation.
 
From first principles, we can expect that tropical rainfall events in a warming world will become more intense. Yet, relatively few people appreciate how this process can intensify the impacts of large-scale climate variations. Over the past decade, frequent El Niño, La Niña and Indian Ocean Dipole events have produced extreme weather in eastern and southern Africa. Collaborators in the US, Europe and East Africa have been studying how climate change amplifies the strength of these teleconnections. We have also been combining these insights with the power of global climate models. This allows us to predict many extreme wet and dry rainy seasons. We can also integrate these forecasts with global satellite observations, thereby producing best-in-science agricultural outlooks.
 
But the most exciting part of the story comes in the last mile, when local meteorologists, agricultural experts, and media outreach developers craft advisories that can potentially reach millions of farmers. Stretching across countries, academic disciplines, and social groups, these information streams connect us, providing those in need with critical opportunities to adapt, manage weather risks, and be more successful. While many technical and societal challenges remain, these partnerships provide important examples of how science can contribute to society.
 
 
 
Dr. Chris Funk is the current recipient of the "International Excellence Award" and the "Fellowship of SCHROFF Foundation". With this award, KIT honours the renowned scientist for his outstanding interdisciplinary research.

Information, networking and exchange for Humboldt Fellows and interested researchers at KIT
 
The Humboldt Tag offers concrete insights into sponsorship opportunities for internationally active researchers. In addition, there is the opportunity to make valuable contacts and exchange ideas during networking.
A highlight of the day is the keynote speech by Humboldt Professor André Platzer on the topic of artificial intelligence. Other highlights include the Humboldt Lightning Talks, in which scholarship holders present their current research projects.

The main aim of the speed-dating format is to get into conversation with new people, to look beyond one's own nose and to get to know new perspectives - by asking a variety of questions directly at the artworks in the ZKM exhibitions. Afterwards there is always a get-together with lemonade and chips (or coffee and cake), where the conversations can continue. :)
 
The format is designed for 20 people, so that internationals can get to know each other, but also make new contacts with people who have been living in Karlsruhe for a while.
