Semester Package GermanTECH@KIT

Are you studying engineering and German? Are you an engineering student interested in picking up some German and learn more about German perspectives in engineering, politics, history and social sciences?

The package is available for undergraduate and graduate students with or without German language skills studying at one of KIT's international partner universities in student exchange.

The Semester Package GermanTECH@KIT is available for students in Mechanical  Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics. Other subjects upon request.

German Language Courses

8 ECTS

Key Competences


2-4 ECTS
- Intensive 3-week pre-semester course (4 ECTS)
- Language course during the semester (4 h/week, 4 ECTS)
 
 

Chose up to 2 courses offered by the House of Competence (HoC). Examples: 

  • Intercultural Training
  • Self and time management 
  • Your Skills in Focus: Civic Engagement for Personal Growth
  • Speech and Presentation Training. 

Many of our courses are offered as intensive weekend sessions or online, rather than on a weekly basis – they easily fit in your semester schedule!

Studium Generale

- German or European Perspectives

4-6 ECTS
Chose up to 2 undergraduate or graduate courses in Engineering  

Chose up to 2 courses offered by FORUM in literature, history, politics or social science lectures or attend intercultural seminars. Examples:

  • How does the European Union work
  • Democracy and Lies
  • Scientific Literacy (Relation between Science and Society)
  • European Cinema
 
Recommended overall course load: 20 ECTS (max. 30 ECTS)

Excursions and City Trips
Enhance your exchange experience by joining one of our excursions and trips – join us for a hike in the Black Forest or explore one of Germany’s picturesque towns with a group of fellow students. Excursions are offered by the International Buddy Programm, the European Student Network, Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe and other university groups.

 

Required language skills for GermanTECH@KIT
German Language Courses: 
We offer language courses for all proficiency levels.Your current language level is determined by a placement test.This ensures that you end up in the language course that is perfect for you!
HoC, FORUM and Engineering Courses:
Do you already speak German well? If you provide a German language certificate at level B1 (GER) with your application you can attend courses taught in German.
You prefer courses taught in English? Please submit an English language certificate at level B2 (GER) with your application.
If you want to enroll in courses taught in both German and English, you need the appropriate language certificates for each language.
How to apply for GermanTECH@KIT package
1.    Nomination by Home Institution
If you want to participate in the German Language, Culture and Engineering Semester please ask your international office to nominate you for the program by sending a nomination e-mail to our incoming coordinator. Regular nomination deadlines and application procedures for overseas exchange students apply.

2.    Application:
As soon as we have received your nomination we get in touch with you regarding the formal application process. 
3.    Preliminary Learning Agreement for your application to KIT:
Please indicate in your preliminary LA the 
-    Block: Intensive German language course (4 ECTS), 
-    Block: the Semester German language course  (4 ECTS)
-    Block: HoC/Studium General (FORUM) course  (up to 10 ECTS) 
-    Block: specific Engineering courses depending on your subject (6-8 ECTS)
ECTS in the different blocks can vary according to requirements of your home institution or your individual preferences.
Course offers of House of Competence (HoC) and Studium Generale (Forum) of the current semester are available on the respective websites. You can check the course list to get an idea what kind of courses are available. 
The final course selection for your studies at KIT will take place in September or  March before the semester starts.

4.    Take the German placement test according to the level you place yourself in and send it to XXXX. The results are needed to put you at the appropriate course level. In case you are an absolute beginner, you don’t need to take the test.
