Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Humboldt Foundation) fosters the cooperation among outstanding scholars from Germany and abroad by promoting the international cultural dialogue and academic exchange. The foundation´s various fellowships and research awards support financially scientists and scholars from abroad to carry out their own research projects in Germany. With an annual budget of approximately 100 million euros, the Humboldt Foundation awards more than 800 research scholarships and research awards every year.

Alexander von Humboldt Professorship: allows outstanding senior researchers to conduct their own long-term and ground-breaking research project (with duration of minimum five years). Applications shall be submitted by German universities only or in cooperation with non-university research institutions prior the corresponsive deadline. The selection takes place twice a year. Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award: allows outstanding senior researchers, obtained a doctoral degree within the last 18 years, to collaborate on long-term research projects (with duration of six to 12 months) with experts at a German research institution of their own choice. Georg Foster Research Fellowship (HERMES) for Experienced Researches: allows experienced senior researchers, obtained a doctoral  degree within the last 12 years, to collaborate on long-term research projects (with duration of six to 18 months) related to development problems with an academic host at a German research institution of their own choice. Georg Foster Research Fellowship (HERMES) for Postdoctoral Researches: allows postdocs/junior researchers from developing and emerging countries, obtained a doctoral degree within the last four years, to conduct their own long-term research project (with duration of six to 24 months) related to development problems with an academic host at a German research institution of their own choice.
