In the style of the German competition, the program Campus de Excelencia Internacional (CEI) was initiated by the the Spanish government in 2009. In this program Spanish universities form an international campus of excellence that concentrates on different research areas in technology and the natural sciences. The objective is, among others, to increase the international visibility of Spanish institutions of higher education and make them more attractive for scientists and young talents.
