Language skills

The success of studying abroad is very dependent on whether you are able to speak the language of the host country of its instruction language. This is why some foreign universities ask foreign applicants to provide a proof of their language skills. This is also the case for some scholarship organizations and foundations.

In case you do not have the necessary language skills, it will be required of you to these before your stay abroad.

You have the following possibilities:

  • Language Center (only in German) at KIT with the possibility of using their language laboratory independently
  • Language classes at cultural institutes
  • Classes at the „Volkshochschule“
  • Private language schools

In order to apply for a DAAD scholarship you will need a DAAD language certicificate which is issued by the KIT Language Center (only in German) after passing an exam.

In English-speaking countries the "Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)" has become standard for proofing your English skills. You can enroll for the TOEFL-Test on this page.

Other countries do not have standard tests, but base their admission on different examination methods. In some countries (e.g. Scandinavia, Netherlands), courses are offered in English in addition to the national language.
