Driving a car

If you want to buy a car in Germany, you should take into account the additional costs (insurance, taxes, fuel price). A convenient alternative is Stadtmobil (only in German), a car-sharing solution.
If you want to drive in Germany with a driver's license from another country, it must be rewritten after 6 months at the "Bürgerbüro" where you live.

Holders of an EU driving license are not affected by this.

In Karlsruhe, all university facilities are easily accessible by bike. Used bikes can be found at or in some bicycle shops (only in German).

Car-sharing is a widely used means of transportation for students in Germany. Passengers or drivers can be found, for example, on (only in German).

One good way to get around in Germany and in Europe is the German railway. Students receive special discounts on the purchase of rail cards 25 and 50, which provide discounts on tickets for a year long.
