KIT students can travel for free with the KIT Card (only together with the "KVV-Bescheinigung") Mo-Fri from 6pm to 6am, on the weekend and public holidays the full day on the KVV network. To use the KVV network outside of these hours, you can purchase a KVV student ticket. It costs € 160,80 per semester (starting September 2019) and can be acquired at the Info Center at the cafeteria lobby and at every KVV-office.
If you want to buy a car in Germany, you should take into account the additional costs (insurance, taxes, fuel price). A convenient alternative is Stadtmobil (only in German), a car-sharing solution.
If you want to drive in Germany with a driver's license from another country, it must be rewritten after 6 months at the "Bürgerbüro" where you live.
Holders of an EU driving license are not affected by this.
Car-sharing is a widely used means of transportation for students in Germany. Passengers or drivers can be found, for example, on www.blablacar.de (only in German).
One good way to get around in Germany and in Europe is the German railway. Students receive special discounts on the purchase of rail cards 25 and 50, which provide discounts on tickets for a year long.
