Visual Story-Telling and Communication of Climate Change

Montag, 23. Oktober 2017, 11:30-15:30
Geb. 01.87, SR B 5.26, 5. OG

For decades, climate change has been a huge arena for heated debates, anxieties, and hope. The year of 2015 was marked by an unprecedented worldwide agreement (The Paris Agreement) between countries to take active measures on this issue. However, with the US withdrawing from the accord and the issue being characterized as urgent, its effective communication is more relevant than ever. A series of research has demonstrated the effective use of visuals in communicating such debated, elusive and complex phenomenon. The term "visuals" in this course entails images, video clips, films, public events and art work, which are more concerned with story-telling, rather than presenting charts and projections of technical data. We will critically explore the scientific findings on such communication and the impact of visuals on: perceptions, emotions, motivation, behaviors, and policies. The students will engage in co-creating visual projects on a climate change issue, which will also relate to their individual disciplines. In sum, this course is interdisciplinary, interactive and based on co-creative and co-experiential learning. It is important that those who wish to take the course, have a sufficient command of English in order to be able to actively participate in all activities. Focus will be set on creative projects rather than on written essays.
