Communication on Climate Change through Visual Story-Telling

Freitag, 26. Mai 2017, 10:30-17:30

Addressing climate change, academic discourses characterize the phenomenon as urgent, challenging, and rapidly changing. Because many manifestations and consequences of climate change are not necessarily visible and projected to happen in an indeterminate future, its communication imposes huge difficulties. A series of research has demonstrated the effective use of visuals in communicating such elusive and complex phenomenon. The term "visuals" in this course entails the use of still and moving images, which are more concerned with story-telling, rather than presenting charts of technical data and projections. During the course, we will examine the scientific findings on such communication and critically explore visual material from various sources and disciplines - Climate Studies, Media, Sociology, Art, Policy making, etc. We will also explore the impact of such images on perceptions, emotions, motivation, behaviors, policies, and social change. The communication on climate change to non-scientist communities will be especially addressed. This course is interdisciplinary, interactive and based on co-creative and co-experiential learning.
