Science Compass - A course through the German Academic System

Understanding the German academic system is a key to successfully accomplishing a PhD and to collaborate with others at a German university.  Ignoring this issue usually leads to lots of challenges and misunderstandings in the common work between supervisors, colleagues and students due to different experiences and perceptions of teaching, learning and communication. Understanding German academic traditions, scientific working culture and related expectations between supervisors, colleagues and students can reduce available tensions in scientific collaboration and reduce misunderstandings.

This workshop aims to make you feel more confident within the German higher education system by gaining insight in backgrounds, academic traditions, requirements and expectations in research, teaching and supervision. Furthermore, this workshop will help to draw clear picture about structures and career paths within German academia.

- The German Higher Education System: traditions, rules and structures
- The meaning of doing a PhD in Germany
- Teaching and Learning cultures in the German academic system
- Supervision and bilateral expectations in research and teaching
- Typical pitfalls in intercultural academic collaboration

- Insight in structures, traditions and hidden rules in German Academia
- Overview about requirements and expectations in research and teaching
- Understanding of collaboration in academic working environments

The workshop will be held in English.
