Multiculturalism – the coexistence of members of different cultures has become characteristic for modern European societies in the course of globalization and internationalization. The acceptance of other cultures on the one hand requires the willingness and also the competence for cultural dialogue. On the other hand, it also implies limits of tolerance towards values and norms of foreign cultures, which may be in conflict with the prevailing values and norms of universal human rights and/or a host country. In the face of the European development of multicultural societies, the following key aspects of the political and social measures with regard to multicultural coexistence will be discussed in the seminar: The seminar is divided into a theoretical part, which introduces the concepts of the current debate on multiculturalism in Europe. In a second part, European integration models will be compared and analyzed based on empirical data. The aim of the seminar is to illuminate and question socio-political discourse with regard to multiculturalism in Europe.
