Media Literacy and Cultural Awareness
Let’s play and experiment with unfamiliar ways of thinking and the art of seeing beyond believing. The course approaches media literacy as advanced skills of critical and creative interpretation of communicated ideas and emotions and links it to cultural awareness viewed as a valuable ability to attune oneself to the diversity of the world – be it for broadening and enriching one’s outlook, a fluent navigation in cross-cultural settings, or new sources of inspiration. Let’s look at our ways of being, feeling, and reasoning through the lens of various cultures – close and distant in space or time, already “known” and yet unfamiliar. Let’s analyze how various media – news, art, movies, maps, fashion, music, … (you name it) – are implicated in the construction and deconstruction of people’s worldviews. Let’s discuss controversial issues pertinent to privilege, power, social norm, value, market, politics, gender, … (you name it). I offer you a reflexive journey into a world of unexpected multivalent meanings and a complex interplay of cultural dispositions, ideological determinations, and disruptive marginalia of human interchange of ideas, feelings, and practices.
