Extension of your stay at KIT

Your stay at KIT is coming to an end, but you would like to stay longer because you

  • would like to write/are writing your final or project thesis at KIT or
  • absolutely want to take certain lectures.

In certain cases, you might be able to extend your stay to do just that.

If you have been studying for less than 2 semesters as an ERASMUS student at KIT, you might be able to stay on as an ERASMUS. You should talk to your home university about this.

Otherwise, there is the possibility to stay on as a Free Mover (i.e. without ERASMUS funding).

Tuition Fees for International Students as from the 2017/18 Winter Semester

From the 2017/2018 winter semester, tuition fees of EUR 1,500 per semester will have to be paid by international students at the universities in Baden-Württemberg.
International students of EU/EEA citizenship are allowed to study without having to pay fees.
According to the new law, the following international students from third countries (with a citizenship of non-EU/EEA countries) will have to pay tuition fees:

  •  Visiting students who are studying as free movers (without a cooperation agreement) for one or two semesters at KIT and do not aim at a degree of KIT.
  • Visiting students who are studying at KIT within the framework of a bilateral cooperation agreement and do not aim at a degree of KIT as from their third semester at KIT (two semesters are free of charge as part of a cooperation agreement, provided that mutual exemption from the payment of fees is agreed upon in the cooperation agreement).
  • Visiting students who come to KIT for a research stay or internship, who attend courses at KIT, and who receive ECTS credits for their study or examination achievements.

According to the new law, the following international students from third countries (with a citizenship of non-EU/EEA countries) are exempt from the obligation to pay tuition fees:

  • Visiting students who are studying at KIT within one of the Baden-Württemberg exchange programs or within the Erasmus programme and do not aim at a degree of KIT.
  • Visiting students who are studying at KIT for one or two semesters within the framework of a bilateral cooperation agreement, in which it is agreed on mutual exemption from the payment of fees (Overseas Direct Partnership), and who do not aim at a degree of KIT (as of the 3rd semester at KIT, however, tuition fees will have to be paid).
  • Visiting students who come to KIT for a research stay or internship, who do not attend courses at KIT, and who do not receive ECTS credits for study or examination achievements.

Important: The receipt of a scholarship has no influence on the obligation to pay tuition fees. Visiting students with a scholarship of DAAD, Baden-Württemberg-Stiftung, VDAC or Fulbright will only be exempt from the obligation to pay tuition fees in the cases mentioned above.

Updated: August 2017

However, please be aware that

  • your stay as an exchange student at KIT cannot exceed 3 semesters in total (ERASMUS + Free Mover),
  • you cannot receive an ERASMUS study grant for longer than a year
  • you need to stay enrolled at your home university,
  • you will need to ask at your university, if you will receive further funding,
  • you will not be able to graduate from KIT and
  • you will have to pay the semester contribution at KIT.

You should send us the following documents so that we can evaluate your case:

Free Mover ERASMUS Student
  • certificate of enrollment from your home university,
  • approval of your KIT departmental coordinator and, for a final/project thesis, approval of your KIT supervisor (by email),
  • approval from your home university/coordinator that you can continue to stay at KIT
  • certificate of enrollment from your home university,
  • approval from your home university/coordinator,
  • new Learning Agreement (needs to be approved by your departmental coordinator at KIT)
  • for a final/project thesis: approval of your KIT supervisor

All documents should be sent to the International Students Office at latest 12 weeks before the start of your extension semester.

After the acceptance of your extension, you will have to re-register at KIT and pay the semester contribution.

Alternatively, you can apply as a regular Bachelors or Masters student at KIT. How this works is explained at “Bachelors and Masters studies at KIT”.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to send us an email.
