Workshop

Creative Thinking in Science

Donnerstag, 29. November 2018, 9:00-17:00
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Bldg. 30.95, Room A+B

Description
For scientists, analytical reasoning is generally considered to be the hallmark of science. Yet, in any research project, there will be points at which logic and methodical rigour are not sufficient to solve research-related challenges. Rather, successfully completing tasks such as identifying an original research question, generating a hypothesis for a puzzling phenomenon or finding a solution to a daunting practical problem also require the ability generate novel ideas. To enable scientists to purposefully find new perspectives when needed, this workshop introduces important strategies facilitating creative thinking. Moreover, participants will apply techniques for generating novel ideas to find solutions to research-related problems of their own.

Benefits
This workshop provides scientists with the opportunity:
• to learn about central insights from research on creativity in science and related domains
• to acquaint themselves with selected strategies for purposefully generating novel ideas
• to generate a first set of ideas for solving research-related problems of their own.

Further Information:
• Since participants will have the opportunity to apply creative thinking techniques in the course of the workshop, individuals with a research-related problem of their own will benefit most from this event. (In selecting a problem, however, please choose one that you have, so far, neither been able to solve by applying your discipline’s conventional solution-strategies nor by consulting with other scientists.)
• This workshop does not provide an introduction to Design Thinking or any other business-focused innovation methodology. (However, the techniques for generating ideas introduced in this workshop can be applied outside science as well.)
• This workshop is a pilot project by the KHYS to expand its range of support measures for young scientists at KIT. We would therefore particularly appreciate your participation in accompanying evaluation measures.

The workshop will be held in English.
